HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 Processors

Compatible 4th and 5th Generation Intel Xeon processors, specifications, cooling requirements, and configuration rules.

Processor Overview

The HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 supports up to two processors, depending on the processor model. One or two matching processors must be selected; mixing two different processor models is not supported.

The required firmware for 5th Generation Intel Xeon Processors is not compatible with the DL360 Gen11 system board shipped with 4th Generation Intel Xeon Processors. A new server order with the latest firmware system board is required to activate 5th Generation Intel Xeon Processors. Field upgrade from 4th Generation to 5th Generation Intel Xeon Processors is not supported.

5th Generation processor SKUs listed by HPE ship with the processor only and support HPE DDR5 Smart Memory Registered RDIMM at 5600 MT/s. 4th Generation processor SKUs ship with the processor only and support HPE DDR5 Smart Memory Registered RDIMM at 4800 MT/s. Adequate fans and heatsinks must be selected.

Processor Cooling Requirements

  • CTO servers populate the necessary fan kits according to system thermal requirements and processor models, with a minimum of five standard fans.
  • Dual-processor configurations require seven fans, either standard or high performance.
  • For processor wattage less than or equal to 185W, Standard Heatsink and Standard Fan are the default cooling configuration.
  • For processor wattage greater than 185W and less than or equal to 270W, Performance Heatsink and Performance Fan must be selected.
  • For processor wattage greater than 270W, Closed Loop Liquid Cooling or a Direct Liquid Cooling Module must generally be selected.
  • A single 300W processor can use Performance Heatsinks and Performance Fan Kits. Field upgrade to two sockets is not supported with this air-cooled configuration.
  • For 350W Intel Open-loop Liquid Cooling CPU models 6458Q and 8470Q, a DLC Module is required when backplanes or drives other than NS204i-u are selected.
  • For a 350W processor other than 6458Q or 8470Q using Closed Loop Liquid Cooling, a maximum of 10 SFF NVMe drives or 20 EDSFF drives can be selected, or a DLC Module must be used for SFF or EDSFF drive models.
  • In an 8 SFF CTO model, selecting a graphics option with a processor above 270W limits the configuration to a maximum of eight NVMe, SAS, or SATA drives.
  • In an EDSFF CTO model, selecting a graphics option with a processor above 270W requires a DLC Module and Performance Fan Kit.

High Bandwidth Memory Processor Considerations

The Intel Xeon-Platinum 9462 uses an HBM die and supports three HBM memory modes.

  • HBM Only: Memory size equals HBM memory capacity. This mode is intended for workloads that fit within 64 GB. System memory is removed. Intel SGX and MKTME are not supported. RBSU displays this as 1LM.
  • Flat Mode: Memory size equals system memory plus HBM memory. HBM and DDR are exposed as separate memory regions. Intel SGX and MKTME are supported in the DDR region. RBSU displays this as 1LM.
  • Cache Mode: Memory size equals system memory only, with HBM hidden and functioning as cache. Intel SGX and MKTME are not supported. RBSU displays this as 2LM.

For Cache Mode, supported system DIMM quantities are 4, 8, or 16 per socket. The system-memory-to-HBM ratio must be 2:1 or 64:1. HPE lists supported examples of eight 16 GB DIMMs, four 32 GB DIMMs, or sixteen 256 GB DIMMs per socket. DDR5 system memory population must be duplicated in a two-socket configuration.

How many processors can the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 support?

The DL360 Gen11 supports up to two processors depending on the processor model. Some processors are limited to a single-socket configuration.

Can two different processor models be installed together?

No. HPE states that mixing two different processor models is not supported; dual-processor configurations require matching processors.

Can a DL360 Gen11 with a 4th Generation Xeon be upgraded to a 5th Generation Xeon?

Not as a field processor upgrade according to this QuickSpecs. HPE states that the required 5th Generation firmware is not compatible with the system board shipped with 4th Generation processors, so a new server order with the latest firmware system board is required.

When does the DL360 Gen11 require performance cooling?

Processors above 185W through 270W generally require the Performance Heatsink and Performance Fan. Higher-power processors above 270W generally require Closed Loop Liquid Cooling or Direct Liquid Cooling, subject to the processor-specific restrictions.

Can a 300W processor use air cooling?

Yes, in a one-socket configuration HPE supports Performance Heatsinks and Performance Fan Kits with a 300W processor. A field upgrade to two sockets is not supported while retaining that air-cooled configuration.

Do processor choices affect storage configuration?

Yes. Several high-wattage processors have storage limits when used with Closed Loop Liquid Cooling, and some 350W configurations limit the number of SFF or EDSFF drives that can be installed.

Do processor choices affect memory speed?

Yes. The QuickSpecs states that maximum memory speed is limited by processor selection. The listed 5th Generation processor options support HPE DDR5 Smart Memory up to the processor-specific supported rate, while the 4th Generation processor options in the ordering section are associated with DDR5-4800 memory.

What do the U, N, P, Q, V, and Y processor suffixes mean?

The suffixes identify workload or platform characteristics. Examples include U for One Socket Optimized, N for Network/5G/Edge, P for Cloud-IaaS, Q for Liquid Cooling, V for Cloud-SaaS, and Y for Intel Speed Select.

Which DL360 Gen11 processors are limited to one socket?

The QuickSpecs explicitly limits several processors to one socket, including the 5th Generation Xeon Platinum 8581V, Platinum 8558U, and Bronze 3508U, as well as certain 4th Generation options such as Gold 6421N and Gold 5411N.

Does the DL360 Gen11 support HBM processors?

Yes. The QuickSpecs lists the 4th Generation Intel Xeon Platinum 9462 HBM processor and documents HBM Only, Flat, and Cache memory modes with specific memory-population requirements.
