Memory Overview

The HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 uses HPE DDR5 Smart Memory Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs). The server provides 32 DIMM slots in a two-processor configuration, with 16 DIMM slots per processor, 8 memory channels per processor, and 2 DIMMs per channel.

The maximum supported RDIMM capacity is 8.0 TB using 32 x 256 GB RDIMMs. Each processor supports up to 4 TB of memory. Maximum memory speed depends on the memory type, memory configuration, and processor model.

5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor configurations use DDR5-5600 memory options, while 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor configurations use DDR5-4800 memory options.

Memory Protection

The DL360 Gen11 supports Advanced ECC. HPE states that Advanced ECC uses single-device data correction to detect and correct single and all multibit errors that occur within a single DRAM chip.

Memory Ordering and Configuration Rules

HPE specifies several important rules when configuring DL360 Gen11 memory:

  • Select one or more memory DIMMs.
  • The maximum memory speed and capacity depend on the memory type, memory configuration, and processor model.
  • Memory DIMM quantities selected per socket must be 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, or 16.

  • DDR5-4800 memory operates at 4800 MT/s with one DIMM per channel and 4400 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel.
  • DDR5 initialization can result in longer boot times than DDR4. HPE notes that the server may go through multiple reboots during POST for default restore.
  • High-capacity DIMMs may have longer lead times depending on vendor supply.

DDR5-5600 Memory

DDR5-5600 96 GB DIMM Restrictions

  • 96 GB memory cannot be mixed with any other memory capacity.
  • 96 GB DDR5-5600 memory cannot be selected with EE LCC (Edge Enhanced Low Core Count) die 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
  • For one processor, permitted quantities of 96 GB DDR5-5600 memory are 1, 6, 8, 12, or 16 DIMMs.
  • For two processors, permitted quantities are 2, 12, 16, 24, or 32 DIMMs.
  • Because the 96 GB DIMM is x4, it can be used when Memory Fault Tolerance is selected.

DDR5-5600 128 GB and 256 GB Restrictions

HPE states that the non-3DS 128 GB DIMM cannot be selected with the 4509Y, 4510, 3508U, and 4510T processors.

The 256 GB DDR5-5600 option is a Quad Rank x4 3DS RDIMM. HPE also includes a configuration warning for this SKU when the Ship-To destination is China.

DDR5-4800 Memory

DDR5-4800 96 GB DIMM Restrictions

  • 96 GB memory cannot be mixed with any other memory.
  • 96 GB DDR5-4800 memory can be selected only with XCC (Extreme Core Counts) and MCC (Medium Core Counts) 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
  • 96 GB DDR5-4800 memory is not supported with HBM processors.
  • If 96 GB memory is selected, either 8 or 16 DIMMs are allowed per processor.
  • If Memory Fault Tolerance is selected, only x4 memory options can be used.

DDR5-4800 128 GB DIMM Restriction

The non-3DS 128 GB DIMM cannot be selected with an HBM processor.

256 GB DIMM Configuration and Thermal Requirements

The 256 GB RDIMM has additional configuration and thermal requirements. HPE notes that 256 GB memory is normally limited to 1 DIMM per channel, allowing a maximum of eight 256 GB DIMMs per processor. A 2-DIMM-per-channel configuration with 16 DIMMs per processor has additional thermal limitations and may require configuration approval.

A fully populated configuration of 32 x 256 GB DIMMs is supported with Direct Liquid Cooling, or with air cooling when all of HPE's specified conditions are met:

  • CPU power is 250W or less.
  • Front storage is limited to a maximum of eight SATA or SAS drives.
  • Performance Fan Kits are installed.
  • Datacenter inlet ambient temperature is at or below 25°C.
  • Networking cards are below 100Gb.

When 256 GB memory is selected, HPE limits the system to seven performance fans or the Closed Loop Cooling fan solution rather than standard fans, with a 25°C ambient limit, unless Direct Liquid Cooling is selected. Without a DLC Module, networking or InfiniBand adapters at 100G or higher cannot be selected.

256 GB Memory, Liquid Cooling, and Storage Restrictions

  • If Closed Loop Liquid Cooling is selected with 256 GB DIMMs and a rear NS204i-u, the maximum NVMe drive count is reduced from 10 to 4.
  • If Closed Loop Liquid Cooling is selected with 256 GB DIMMs, an internal NS204i-u, or a rear NS204i-u, the maximum EDSFF drive count is reduced from 20 to 10.
  • In an EDSFF CTO model, a 350W CPU with Closed Loop Liquid Cooling cannot be combined with 256 GB DIMMs.
  • In an EDSFF model with 256 GB DIMMs and a rear NS204i-u, a DLC Module must be selected.

DIMM Population Guidelines

The DL360 Gen11 has 16 DIMM slots per processor. HPE provides the following general population rules:

  • There is no longer a requirement to install DIMMs in pairs in non-RAS modes.
  • There should be at least one DDR5 DIMM per socket.
  • Install DIMMs only when the corresponding processor is installed.
  • If only one processor is installed, only half of the system's DIMM slots are available.
  • When one DIMM is installed in a channel, populate the DIMM slot farthest from the CPU, identified as DIMM slot 0 for that channel.
  • To maximize performance, balance total memory capacity across all installed processors.
  • With two processors, balance DIMMs across both processors.
  • White DIMM slots identify the first slot to populate in a channel.
  • All DIMMs in a processor socket must have the same number of ranks unless an explicitly supported exception applies.
  • x8 and x4 DIMMs cannot be mixed in the same channel or processor socket.
  • Mixing non-3DS and 3DS RDIMMs is not allowed within a channel, across channels, or across processor sockets.
  • 9x4 RDIMMs cannot be mixed with other DIMM types identified by HPE, including Crow Pass 10x4 RDIMMs or non-9x4 RDIMMs.
  • All DDR5 DIMMs must operate at the same speed within a processor socket.
  • Rank mixing on a channel is not supported except for the Standard RDIMM 1 Rank + 2 Rank combination when all 16 DIMMs for a processor socket are populated.
  • Mixing RDIMM vendors is allowed, but mixing vendors is not allowed for 3DS RDIMMs.
  • A maximum of eight logical ranks per channel is supported.

DL360 Gen11 DIMM Population Order

HPE specifies the following slot population order for each 16-DIMM processor socket. DIMM counts omitted by HPE are not qualified by Intel.

DIMM Blanks

HPE DDR4 DIMM Blank Kit P07818-B21 is embedded and shipped by default in all DL360 Gen11 CTO servers to enhance thermal conditions. HPE notes that the DL360 Gen11 leverages the same DIMM blanks used by the DL360 Gen10 Plus.

If Closed-loop Liquid Cooling or Direct Liquid Cooling is installed and system memory uses 16 GB, 32 GB, 96 GB, or 128 GB DIMMs, the DIMM blanks must be removed. With 256 GB DIMMs, DIMM blanks are installed by default with both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations.
